Zobrist Slams White Sox Back to .500

It was all swell for the White Sox until the bottom of the 6th inning. Leading 5-2, with Bartolo Colon pitching another gem, it seemed like the Sox were on their way to becoming 6-4 and at taking at least 2 from that horrid dome named Tropicana Field. Then, with one swing, the night was ruined. Colon left with the bases loaded on a couple of unlucky plays and bad calls from should-be-amateur umpire C.B. Buckner. Then with one swing, Ben Zobrist put the Rays ahead with a slam off of Matt Thronton, who had not given up a run all season till that point. The Sox were then shutout by the Rays bullpen. The Rays even up the series at 1-1 after a 6-5 victory tonight. Shields picks up the win while Thornton takes the loss. Percival barely got by in the ninth for his second save.

The one positive that has to come out of this game is how well Bartolo Colon pitched. He had good velocity (he got it up to 93 MPH) and he had great break on his hard breaking pitches. He gave up a home run to Carlos Pena and did give up 5 earned runs. But those numbers aren't telling of how good he really was. Colon really deserved to win this game. He should have left with a quality start. Getz allowed the inning to continue on a ground ball that he knocked down. He saved a run on the play, but he also failed to react fast enough and throw it to first, for Pat Burrell was running and he's real slow. Then, Dioner Navarro walked on a couple of really close pitches that Colon did not get, courtesy of one of the worst umpires in baseball: C.B. Buckner. He was bad for both teams, but the point of having an umpire is so that he calls a good game, not a bad one. Then came the really bad part. Thornton made Zobrist look bad on the first pitch. Then he missed with a cutter. The next pitch was a slider that did not bend enough and Zobrist lined it out of the park to left field. Thronton failed to get an out in what was probably his worst outing of the entire season. Clayton Richard then pitched two very good innings to keep the Sox in the game. However, the Sox were unable to capitalize with a runner in scoring position and two outs twice. Notable offensive players include Chris Getz, who was 2-4 with a big game-tying RBI double. Carlos Quentin was only 1-4, but he hit a big home run in the 5th to give the Sox the lead. Jermaine Dye then followed Quentin with a two run homer. He was also 1-4.

The Sox will have a tough road ahead of them with Kazmir and Garza as their next two pitching foes. To be honest, I'll be happy with a split here. I guess a series win was just too much to ask.
